Using Your York University Dental Plan
If you are a full time York University student, you are most likely enrolled in a dental plan already. Undergraduates are covered by the YFS Health and Dental Plan and graduate students by the YUGSA plan, both administered by Green Shield Canada, with the fee paid as part of your tuition. You can use any licensed dentist in Canada, and your plan works with us.

Cosmetic treatments such as whitening and veneers are usually not covered, though we offer student friendly payment plans for them.
Finding your Green Shield ID
Your Green Shield member ID is usually your student number in a simple format. Undergraduates: YFS + student number + -00. Graduate students: YGS + student number + -00. Bring it to your visit, or we can help you find it.
International & other coverage
International Students, CDCP, and Refugee Care
If you are an international student, your York student dental plan is almost always your best dental coverage, and it works at our clinic. Note that UHIP, the University Health Insurance Plan, covers medical care, not routine dental, so the YFS or YUGSA dental plan is the one to use for your teeth. Most international students are not eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan, which is for residents who meet income and residency rules, so please do not count on it.
If you are a domestic student with no other dental insurance and a low income, you may qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan, and we accept it. If you are a student with refugee status, we also accept refugee coverage through the IFHP for the services it covers. Whatever your situation, we will check what you are eligible for and explain your costs clearly before we begin.

York Student Dental Questions
Good to know
How do I use my York University dental plan at your clinic?
It is simple. Bring your York student card when you visit. We check your Green Shield coverage, tell you what your plan pays and what, if anything, you will owe, and we submit the claim paperwork for you. You do not need to fill out forms yourself.
What does the York student dental plan cover?
The YFS plan for undergraduates and the YUGSA plan for graduate students, both through Green Shield, cover everyday care like checkups, cleanings, X-rays, fillings, and extractions, up to an annual maximum of around $600 per plan year. Root canals are often partly covered and major work is limited. We confirm your exact benefits before any treatment.
Do you bill Green Shield directly, or do I pay first?
We take care of the claim for you and, in many cases, we can bill Green Shield directly so you pay little or nothing at the visit. Where direct billing is not possible for a service, we submit the claim so you are reimbursed quickly. Either way, we tell you your expected cost before we start.
Does the plan cover braces or Invisalign?
Orthodontic treatment like braces is generally not covered by the standard York student plans. We do not provide braces or Invisalign at our clinic, but if your goal is a straighter looking smile, we can often improve it with veneers or bonding, and we are happy to talk through the options at a free consultation.
Can I opt out of the York dental plan?
Yes, during the designated opt out period, usually early in the fall term and again in January for winter students, if you already have comparable dental coverage, for example through a parent’s plan. Note that OHIP and UHIP do not count as comparable coverage. You submit the opt out request online with proof of your other insurance.
Are international students covered for dental care?
Yes. As an international student you are enrolled in the YFS or YUGSA dental plan just like domestic students, and it works at our clinic. UHIP covers your medical care, not routine dental, so use your student dental plan for your teeth. Most international students are not eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan.
I am graduating soon. Can I still use my plan?
Usually yes. Your York student dental coverage typically runs until August 31 of the academic year you paid for, even if you finish classes in spring. That gives you a few months to use any remaining benefits, so it is a good idea to book any treatment you have been putting off before your coverage ends.
Can I combine my student plan with my parent's insurance?
Yes. If you are covered by both your York student plan and a parent’s insurance, we can coordinate the two to reduce or even eliminate what you pay out of pocket. Bring both plan details and we will sort it out for you.
Where are you, and can I get there from campus?
We are at 261 Finch Avenue West in North York, at Finch and Bathurst, reachable by TTC and with parking on site. We are a calm clinic away from the busy campus, which many students prefer, and we make appointments easy to fit around your class schedule.
